Tyler is a second year Carpentry Apprentice at CLC, located in the Southampton Branch. We sit down with Tyler to discuss his apprenticeship journey so far!

1. Can you tell me a little bit about yourself and what inspired you to do a Carpentry Apprenticeship?
I am an 18-year-old, second year of a three-year Carpentry Apprenticeship at CLC. My inspiration to pursue a career in carpentry came from my cousin and other family members who work within the trade.
2. Are there any tools or techniques you’ve mastered that you’re proud of?
Using the chop saw, I’ve learnt how to set the depths for cuts and how to move the saw to different angles.
3. What type of work do you do?
Door fitting, assisted living, door replacements, installing new fire rated doors to properties that have old front doors and maintaining current doors.
4. What has been the most valuable skill you’ve learned during your apprenticeship so far?
The most valuable skill I have learnt is to communicate and adapt to any situation.
5. How do you feel your knowledge has grown?
My understanding of regulations has significantly improved, thanks to the guidance from my mentors. They’ve taught me important details about door gap requirements and the proper methods for sealing doors effectively.
6. What safety practices have you learned, and how does CLC prioritise safety on-site?
I have learnt proper lifting techniques and gained asbestos awareness training. CLC prioritises safety by ensuing everyone has the correct PPE in good condition, with additional PPE available on-site if needed. Supervisors also play a key role by consistently providing safety reminders to reinforce best practices.
7. How has CLC supported your growth and learning throughout the program?
CLC has supported my growth by providing opportunities to learn various skills and techniques. Moving between door fitters which allows me to improve my skills and knowledge as well as exploring different ways for completing tasks effectively.
8. Are there any mentors or team members who have had a big impact on your development?
Yes, thank you to Jolon Hoile (Carpenter), Aaron Hobbins (Carpenter), and Marcus Williams-Richardson (Site Supervisor).
9. Are there any achievements or milestones you’re particularly proud of during your apprenticeship so far?
Passing my CSCS (Construction Skills Certificate Scheme) Test.
10. What’s the best part of the CLC apprenticeship so far?
The best part of the CLC apprenticeship has been the opportunity to expand my knowledge, gain new skills, and improve on the skills I already had. Learning while earning has been rewarding, and CLC has provided a supportive environment that encourages growth and development.
11. What are your career goals once you complete your apprenticeship?
My career goals are to stay at CLC to gain extra knowledge and possibly grow and learn other elements of the company such as fire stopping services.
12. Any top tips for new apprentices?
My top tips:
Pay attention to the person who is teaching you, even if they are actively demonstrating. Shadowing them can help you learn something new.
Always ask questions when you’re unsure, especially if you’re given a task to complete on your own for the first time.
