Decarbonisation Works Progressing at Bradford Royal Infirmary and St Luke’s Hospital
CLC is making strong progress on a decarbonisation and refurbishment project at Bradford Royal Infirmary and the nearby St Luke’s Hospital, delivering energy-efficiency upgrades that will significantly reduce energy consumption and support the NHS’s wider sustainability ambitions.
The works include roofing improvements, window replacements and the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. At St Luke’s Hospital, an additional solar PV installation is also underway to further increase the use of renewable energy across the estate.
Scaffolding has now been erected across the required buildings, with roofing works currently 50% complete on Block One and Field House at Bradford Royal Infirmary. The project remains firmly on programme, with completion expected by the end of March 2026.
Delivering Decarbonisation for NHS Estates
The programme will deliver a range of environmental benefits for the hospitals. Two roofs are being upgraded with enhanced insulation, alongside the installation of new energy-efficient windows and solar PV systems across both sites.
Together, these measures will significantly reduce energy demand while generating renewable electricity on site. The upgrades support the Trust’s wider decarbonisation agenda while helping to lower operational energy costs.
Improving the energy performance of NHS buildings is becoming increasingly important. Many healthcare facilities across the UK are ageing assets that require modernisation to meet today’s efficiency standards. Without these improvements, the cost of heating and maintaining older buildings can place unnecessary strain on NHS resources.
Strong Collaboration Driving Progress
The success of the project has been underpinned by a positive and collaborative working relationship with the client and hospital teams. CLC has worked closely with the Trust throughout the programme, successfully achieving key milestones while carefully managing costs.
The Estates and Capital team at the hospitals has played an important role in facilitating the works and supporting delivery on site.
The strong partnership has created opportunities to explore further decarbonisation and retrofit solutions across the estate, as both teams continue to work together to bring NHS buildings up to modern standards while improving energy efficiency for the future.
