Works have been completed on a fire safety upgrade project with Southampton City Council on a supported housing property.
The Project
Our Southampton team recently completed a refurbishment project for Southampton City Council in a supported housing residence.
The aim of this project was to install fire safety measures such as new fire doors and a sprinkler system as part of Southampton City Council’s fire safety upgrade scheme.
As part of the project, the communal areas benefitted from fresh decoration as well as improvements to make the building more accessible to residents, including swipe card entry front doors and key safes.
Our Solution
We fitted new fire doors, free swing door closers and automatic door closers alongside installing fire curtains above door frames.
The free swing doors allow residents to easily push the doors as they move through the building on a day-to-day basis. However the doors are linked to the fire alarm system so that when this is set off, the doors close and free movement is restricted so that they become an effective fire barrier.
To increase accessibility for the residents, we installed swipe card access to front doors, along with key safes in case swipe cards were left inside the flats.
Challenges
Due to the age of the building, asbestos had to be removed to allow works to be carried out. This posed a Health & Safety challenge as residents remained in the building.
We needed the residents to be away from their flats for a few hours at a time, so our team put on a coffee morning in the communal areas during these times.
This meant areas could be sealed and removal works carried out safely. Once the asbestos was removed and the area was cleaned, residents were free to move back into these areas.
The residents have enjoyed these coffee mornings so much, they will be continuing them even though the works are completed.
The Result
The residents and staff of Lundy Close were very happy with the finished result. The building is now safer for the residents with a bright, new look and feel.
For residents with mobility issues, the property is now much more accessible with key card entry and automatic doors.
“All the CLC workmen were brilliant, polite and respectful. They always made us laugh and explained the process to use to make us feel reassured. We absolutely love our new doors and the whole property has a new clean, fresh look throughout. A big thanks to CLC” – Residents of Lundy Close.
The project has also been nominated for Fire and Security Matters’ Fire Safety Project of the Year award and the Security and Fire Excellence Awards’ Passive Fire Project of the Year.
