Housing 21 – Carroll Gardens Refurbishment

We carried out refurbishment works to Carroll Gardens in Nottingham to turn a tired supported living accommodation into a bright and inviting space.

Providing support and facilities to the vunerable and elderly in Nottingham, Carroll Gardens was in need of some refurbishment and minor structural development work. The main areas that needed improvement were the Lounge, Main Entrance and Communal areas of the building which all needed a freshening up for a more welcoming and modern feel to the facility.

The Project

After years of wear and tear, we partnered with Housing 21 to complete the refurbishment and minor building alterations to Carroll Gardens. 

The works in this project included redecorations of the Main Entrance, Lounge and Communal areas, alongside the 65 flats for residents. Minor building alterations included converting an existing area into a mobility scooter store and building an on-site hairdressers for residents.

We also conducted some passive fire precaution works by replacing existing fire doors and installing new internal and external lighting including floodlights to the outside of the main entrance.

Our Solution

Over a period of 8 weeks, our workforce painted, plastered and converted this tired building into a welcoming supported living facility for residents and their families.

To make sure we kept the disruption to a minimum, we worked with staff to create a schedule whereby areas could be closed off to residents during works. This included the communal lounge and laundry room.

Due to the short project turnaround, we utilised our local, directly-employed workforce to conduct the works and put to use their multi-skilled knowledge and experience to save both, time and money.

Our team also worked with staff to create a colour scheme for the areas being decorated and even sourced a special primer so we could paint the existing brown timber door frames; white.


During the project, we strove to reduce the impact that we had on the environment and have reduced the carbon footprint of Carroll Gardens by installing efficient LED lighting with dimming controls. This has given the building an energy efficiency saving of 75% against the original light fittings.

Alongside our team of operatives, we also utilised 2 apprentices on this project as part of our initiative to employ 1 apprentice for every £1m turnover per year.

To make the building more accessible, we installed automatic doors at the main entrance and accompanying new handrails to ensure ease of access.

The installation of a new set of sliding concertina doors in the lounge enabled residents to have private space when needed.

The Results

This once tired and unwelcoming space has now become a bright and inviting home for their wonderful residents.

Using our own employees, we were able to guarantee a consistently high quality of works, fewer issues and a faster completion time – much to the delight of the client who needed a quick turnaround.

The Court Manager of Carroll Gardens was pleased with the results and has said: “The work is exceptional, nothing but compliments from Residents, Visitors and Staff.
